Academic Freedom Statement

The Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) is committed to fostering an environment of academic freedom that supports the intellectual growth, professional development, and critical thinking of its students and faculty. Academic freedom is essential to METC’s mission of preparing medical professionals to serve effectively in the U.S. Armed Forces and beyond.

METC’s academic freedom principles are guided by the following commitments:

Encouragement of Open Inquiry
Faculty and students are encouraged to explore, discuss, and critically analyze medical, scientific, and professional topics relevant to their fields of study. Open inquiry is vital to advancing medical knowledge and improving healthcare practices within the military and civilian sectors.

Freedom of Expression
Faculty and students have the freedom to express their views on medical, ethical, and professional issues within the bounds of professional conduct and respect for differing perspectives. This freedom supports the development of innovative solutions to complex healthcare challenges.

Responsibility and Professional Standards
Academic freedom at METC is exercised in alignment with the values and standards of the Department of Defense, and the broader medical community. Faculty and students are expected to uphold ethical principles, maintain professionalism, and respect the sensitive nature of medical education and training.

Balance with Mission Requirements:  While METC supports the free exchange of ideas, academic freedom is balanced with the responsibility to protect classified or sensitive information and ensure alignment with the mission of the U.S. Armed Forces. Discussions and research must contribute to the readiness and effectiveness of military medical personnel.

Commitment to Excellence.  METC is dedicated to fostering a culture of academic excellence where faculty and students can pursue rigorous scholarship, innovative research, and professional development. Academic freedom is a cornerstone of this commitment, enabling the campus to produce highly skilled medical professionals who are prepared to meet the challenges of military and civilian healthcare.

By upholding these principles, METC ensures that its educational environment remains dynamic and focused on preparing medical professionals to serve with competence, character, and integrity.
