Radiologic Technologist

Program Description:
The Radiologic Technologist program prepares students to function as entry-level radiographers in fixed and deployable medical facilities.

Radiologic technologists are allied healthcare professionals who perform radiographic procedures and related patient care duties to help diagnose various medical ailments. The instructional design of this program’s courses is group-lock step. This is a consolidated program with three military services that has a two phase, field of study schedule. Resident training is first conducted at the METC and then the student transitions to clinical training that is conducted at military medical treatment facilities (MTF).

Upon initial entry to METC, students are provided formal education and training that develops them into entry-level radiologic technologists within fixed and deployable medical facilities. Students will learn the radiographic mission and scope of practice.

Training includes the study of: radiation physics, anatomy and physiology, theory and practice of fixed and mobile radiologic equipment, chemical and digital processing, and routine and special radiographic positioning.

Concepts and principles of computed tomography, mammography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance imaging, and sonography are introduced.

Methods of instruction include, but are not limited to: lecture, demonstration, online materials, simulations, laboratory practice, and practical exercises. Quality control and safety techniques are emphasized throughout the program. Prior to transitioning to a clinical environment, students will gain instruction and practice in medical ethics, patient care, and a comprehensive pre-clinical review.

Clinical training provides students with clinical knowledge and hands-on experiential training which consists of clinical practicum in a MTF. The program prepares the student to exercise judgment and accept responsibility in performing diagnostic procedures in a clinical setting.

Students train in the diagnostic imaging areas to include but not limited to: the theory of basic electricity, atomic theory, production of X-rays, radiographic technique, radiographic film and chemical processing, radiographically oriented anatomy and physiology, routine and special radiographic positioning, theory and practice of special radiographic techniques, and introduction to special radiographic procedures.

Additionally, students train in: patient reception, film management, and quality control and self-paced study for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam.

Clinical rotations include operating room, routine and special radiographic procedures, mobile equipment exams, fluoroscopy, and other modalities as available.

Proficiency advancement in clinical applications is determined by the program director and clinical advisor/coordinator on a case-by-case basis.

To provide armed service members the academic and technical foundations necessary to competently perform radiographic procedures and related patient care in Military Medical Treatment Facilities that provide quality medical care to service members and their families.

SPECIFIC PROGRAM INFORMATION.

Prerequisites: (outlined below)

Army: 68P
► The program is open to the Active Components, Reserve Components and DOD civilians.

► Applicants must meet the prerequisites listed in the Army Training Requirements and Resources System (ATRRS), AR 614-200.

► Phase 1 training is 24 weeks in length, training conducted in residence at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

► Phase 2 training is 22 weeks in length, training conducted at various participating Medical Treatment Facilities in the US.
Navy: NEC HM-8452
► Personnel must meet all prerequisites listed in the Navy's Catalog of Navy Training Courses (CANTRAC).

► Phase 1 training is 21 weeks in length, training conducted in residence at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

► Phase 2 training is 30 weeks in length; training conducted at various participating Medical Treatment Facilities in the US.





Air Force: 4R031
► Personnel must meet all prerequisites listed in AF Catalog 36-2223, Diagnostic Imaging section.

► Air Force members must meet physical requirements IAW AFI 10-248.

► Phase 1 training is 19 weeks in length, training conducted in residence at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

► Phase 2 training is 32 weeks in length; training conducted at various participating Medical Treatment Facilities in the US.


























PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the student is expected to function as an entry level radiographer in fixed and deployable medical facilities, performing radiographic procedures and related patient care duties under the supervision of a health care provider. Graduates will demonstrate the following:
(1) The ability to comprehend, apply and evaluate information relevant to the role of the entry-level radiographer.
(2) Technical proficiency in all skills required to fulfill the role of an entry-level radiographer.
(3) Personal behaviors consistent with professional expectations for the entry-level radiographer.
Phase 1
Phase 1 provides didactic instruction with practical application. Training includes basic theory of electricity, radiographic technique, film processing, digital imaging, anatomy and physiology, theory of and special radiographic procedures and the associated equipment. Radiation protection is taught and reinforced throughout the course. Practical exercises and computerized or written examinations are used to assess accumulation and retention of knowledge and skills.
Phase 2
Phase 2 provides clinical training in Radiography at various Phase 2 sites located throughout the US. The training will focus on standard clinical radiography, patient care, infection control, mobile radiography, departmental administration, special clinical radiography and procedures, quality control/darkroom procedures, and radiation protection. Graduates of Phase 2 are expected to perform as an entry-level radiographer.


ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:


ACADEMIC STANDARDS
Students are evaluated on their ability to pass examinations based on identified lesson specific learning objectives. The program's objectives encompass a knowledge base of cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills considered essential to perform the duties of a Radiographer. Students must pass all units of instruction in Phase 1 and Phase 2 to successfully complete this program.

Academic Units of Instruction
The program consists of 19 consolidated academic courses in Phase I and a clinical Phase II training. During each course, students must comply with the following standards:
a. Score a minimum of 70% on each written and practical exam.
b. Maintain a minimum overall program average of 70%.
c. Maintain a minimum course average of 70%.
d. Not to exceed a total of 3 written exam failures during Phase 1 of instruction.
e. Not to exceed 4 practical exam failures during Phase I of instruction.
f. Pass all of the course retest written and practical examinations with a grade of 70% or above.
g. In Phase I, grades are recorded as numerical grades and computed as a combined weighted average of the written exams (60%) and practical exams (40%).
h. Note: The number of written and practical examination failures does not carry over to Phase 2 for purposes of student disposition.
Navy Specific Course
During the Navy Service Specific preliminary courses students must comply with the following: Score a minimum of 75% on each written exam. Exam passage will be documented as Pass/Fail and will not be included in the GPA. Cannot exceed a total of 2 written exam failures. Must pass all course retests with a grade of 75% or above. The number of written exam failures does not carry over to the consolidated Phase 1 or Service Specific Phase 2.
Army Specific Course
During Basic Medical Orientation Training students must comply with the following: Score a minimum of 70% on each written exam. Exam pass is documented and will not be included in the GPA for the consolidated program. Student must pass all course retests with a grade of 70% or above.

Pregnancy Poliy for students in the METC Radiologic Technologist program
Female students that become pregnant during any phase of the Radiology program will continue training without disenrollment from the program. Modifications in training will only be made to accommodate the mandatory 12 week maternity leave period. This will result in an extension of the phase II training period; as well it will ensure competency is met for mobile and fluoroscopy exams, if the student had not previously completed these competencies.

In accordance with military regulations, female military personnel must notify their chain of command and their primary care manager of pregnancy status. This requirement is solely to comply with medical readiness standards to ensure the service member is coded appropriately so that they are non-deployable for the duration of the pregnancy.

Course Curriculum

RAD 101 Introduction to Radiology
Description: This course provides an overview of the foundations of radiography and the practitioner's role in the health care delivery system. Principles, practices, and policies of health care organizations are examined. Professional radiographer development and credentialing are also examined. Major types of radiographic equipment are introduced.

MBUS 001 Medical Terminology
Description: This course provides the knowledge required to read and write medical terminology, abbreviations, and symbols, and interpret oral and written forms of medical communication.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to program.

BIOL 101 Anatomy & Physiology
Description: This course provides an overview of human anatomy and physiology necessary to perform radiographic procedures.
Prerequisite(s): Medical Terminology

PHYS 101 Radiation Physics
Description: This course provides an overview of the basic properties and principles necessary to understand the structure and functions of a diagnostic X-ray machine.
Prerequisite(s): High School or College Algebra **see service-specific requirements.

QMGT 101 Principles of Quality Management
Description: This course presents theory and practice for operating a successful quality assurance program in a diagnostic radiology department. Students will discuss the importance of quality control with respect to health care costs, radiation exposure to patients, and improvement of the diagnostic quality of films.

RAD 103 Radiographic Procedures of the Upper & Lower Extremities
Description: The course provides an overview of the knowledge and application required to perform standard radiographic positioning for upper and lower extremities. The problem-solving process and image analysis are incorporated throughout the course. Radiographic anatomy, Osteology, and positioning are discussed and applied in the live and/or simulated laboratory using radiographic machines, IR processing, and digital imaging methods.

RAD 102 Imaging Equipment
Description: This course provides an overview of knowledge and application of radiographic equipment and quality control procedures. Students will operate imaging equipment and will apply safety principles in a laboratory setting.
Prerequisite(s): Enrolled in Radiation Physics.

RAD 105 Radiographic Procedures of the Skull & Spine
Description: The course provides an overview of the knowledge and application required to perform standard imaging procedures for the skull and spine. The problem-solving process and image analysis are incorporated throughout the course. Radiographic anatomy and positioning are discussed and applied in the live and/or simulated laboratory using radiographic machines, film processing, and digital imaging methods.

RAD 106 Radiographic Procedures of the Bony Thorax & Abdomen
Description: The course provides an overview of the knowledge and application required to perform standard imaging procedures for the thorax and abdomen. The problem-solving process and image analysis are incorporated throughout the course. Radiographic anatomy and positioning are discussed and applied in the live and/or simulated laboratory using radiographic machines, film processing, and digital imaging methods.

BIOL 110 Radiation Biology
Description: This course provides an overview of the effects of ionizing radiation on human cells, tissues, and organs. A review of basic cell biology provides a foundation for the remainder of the course. Physical and biological factors influencing radiation response are discussed. Acute and chronic effects of radiation exposure are introduced, with an emphasis on dose-response relationships.

RAD 104 Radiation Protection
Description: This course covers techniques and equipment designed for reducing unnecessary radiographic exposure to the patient and radiographer. Government agency standards and regulations will be discussed.
Prerequisite(s): Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, BIOL 110 Radiation Biology.

RAD 107 Radiographic Procedures of Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary Systems
Description: This course provides an overview of the knowledge and application required to perform standard imaging procedures for the gastrointestinal & genitourinary systems. The problem-solving process and image analysis are incorporated throughout the course. Radiographic anatomy and positioning are discussed and applied in the live and/or simulated laboratory using radiographic machines, film processing, and digital imaging methods.

BIOL 111 Radiographic Pathology
Description: This course will review the anatomy and physiology associated with human body systems and common traumatic injuries and disease processes identifiable on a radiograph. Pathologic terminology and disease classifications will be introduced.
Prerequisite(s): Enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology.

RAD 108 Radiographic Procedures of the Nervous & Circulatory Systems
Description: The course discusses imaging procedures for the nervous and circulatory systems. Image analysis is incorporated throughout the course. Radiographic anatomy and positioning are discussed.
Prerequisite(s): Enrolled in Anatomy & Physiology

RAD 201 Special Procedures & Imaging Modalities
Description: This course will discuss special procedures and imaging modalities associated with medical imaging. This course presents the basic equipment and principles of the imaging modalities within the profession of radiologic sciences; inclusive of mammography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance imaging, sonography, and interventional radiology.

MHUM 101 Medical Ethics and Law
Description: This course introduces students to the professional, ethical, and legal framework of current radiology and healthcare practices, including the role of the radiographer within this system. Students will participate in exercises to identify and resolve possible ethical and/or legal situations.
Prerequisite(s): None.

RAD 202 Patient Care
Description: This course provides the student with the basic concepts of patient care, including consideration of the physical and psychological needs of the patient. Routine and emergency patient care procedures are described, including patient care and safety, drug administration, vital signs, and infection control procedures. The role of the radiographer in patient education is identified.
Prerequisite(s): None.

RAD 203 Computed Tomography (CT)
Description: This course introduces the concepts and physical principles employed in computed tomography imaging with an overview of Computed Tomography (CT) dose effects, data acquisition, and image distribution.

RAD 210 Certification Prep
Description: This course prepares students for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) exam through comprehensive lab exams and a comprehensive pre-clinical review integrating all program material in preparation for clinical application.

BMO 101-A Basic Medical Orientation
Description: To provide the basic concepts of patient care in a radiology setting to include routine and emergency procedures and the role of the radiographer in patient evaluation and education.

MATH 101-A Math Refresher (Army Specific)
Description: This course provides a re-familiarization of such operations as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions based on problem areas that became evident in your pre-math test. Simplified algebraic expressions will also be covered.

MATH 101-N Technical Math (Navy Specific)
Description: This course provides a review of the principles of mathematics as applicable to the physics of radiologic technology; use of logarithms, including multiplication, division, powers, and roots; scientific notation; geometry of the circle, square, and rectangle; basic trigonometric functions; linear equations in the unknown; Cartesian coordinate plane; slope of a straight line; linear equations from given conditions; and graphic solution of two or more linear equations.
Prerequisite(s): One year of high school or college credit with a "C" grade or higher.

FTX 101-A Field Training Exercise (Army Specific)
Description: This course provides a foundation of Army special topics. The course will reinforce learned medical occupation specialty knowledge, skills, common soldier tasks, warrior tasks, and skills in a realistic tactical environment. This course will provide specific knowledge and skills necessary to set up and operate the radiology section of a field medical unit.

AFCP 101 Air Force Career Progression
Description: This course provides a foundation of Air Force special topics. The lessons will highlight the Air Force medical service, career progression, safety, security, and supply.

101-N SNAP/SAMS
Description: This course provides the student with the knowledge to operate the SAMS Radiation Health Module.

USAF 101 Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) Expeditionary Medical Readiness Course (EMRC)
Description: This course provides practical and didactic training, with an orientation to all continuing Medical Readiness Training (MRT) core topics to: active duty, AFRC and ANG personnel attending 3-level medical/dental AFSC awarding courses.

USAF Clinicals Phase II Course (Air Force Specific)
Description: This training provides practical clinical training and experience to perform basic radiographic procedures/exams and related patient care duties. Emphasis is to acquire competency in performing procedures on actual sick and injured under the supervision of qualified radiographers and radiologists in selected Medical Treatment Facilities (MTF's).

The Military Continuing Education Seminar for Radiologic Technologists is sponsored by the Medical Education & Training Campus (METC) and the Tri Service Radiography Program on Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Registration for this event begins on 16 May 2016.

This is an annual event offering FREE six continuing education credits, pending ASRT approval, within the medical imaging profession.

Registration is open to all but seating is limited.

No-shows deprive others of a chance to attend therefore no-shows in 2015 will be ineligible to register in 2016.

Pre-registration is non-transferable.


Radiology Management Course

Fort Sam Houston, Medical Education & Training Campus

This event is open to Army Active Component (AC) and Reserve Components (RC) NCOs, (grade E-6 or higher, unless holding a clinical instructor position), who are assigned or pending assignment to a position that involves supervision and/or management at a fixed medical facility, or deployable medical unit. Department of the Army civilian employees, who serve as clinical instructors for the Phase 2 of the Radiology Specialist Course, may also attend. Applicants must possess MOS 68P, or equivalent civilian training. Military applicants must meet the physical and mental standards IAW DA PAM 611-21. After completion of this course, AC Soldiers must have 6 months service time remaining; RC must have 1 year service remaining IAW AR 135-200 and NGR 351-1.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
Individual quotas are managed by the teaching proponent, Radiography Program, Medical Education & Training Campus (METC)

Applications must be submitted no later than 60 days prior to the start date of the course. The individual's unit is responsible for funding RC Soldiers (OCONUS) and civilians (local funding only).

All Clinical Instructors/NCOICs must bring the following documents: TDA, Curriculum Vitae (CV), current ARRT card, copy of Joint Commissions Certificate.

The primary focus of this conference is to educate and expose mid level Army, Navy, and Air Force NCO's to new technologies, professional development, management concepts, quality control , as well as, upcoming government regulations as they apply to the field of Radiology. This course is open to U.S. Army personnel on active duty, Army Reserve, Army National Guard, Navy and Air Force personnel, enlisted grade E-5 to E-6.
