JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas –
The Certification Board for Urologic Nurses & Associates (CBUNA) is pleased to announce the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston, Texas, has been granted reaccreditation for the Urology Technician Program certification program.
The Urology Technician Program, which has maintained accreditation from CBUNA since 2002, teaches enlisted Navy and Air Force surgical technologists the various aspects of urological care in both clinic and operating room environments. Since the program’s affiliation with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ College of Allied Health Sciences in 2019, students now receive 21 upper-level college credits upon graduation.
The program teaches a blended course that includes knowledge and performance-based assessments focused on the diagnosis and treatment of urologic disorders. Students receive simulation-based training in laboratory testing, surgical procedures, and radiological equipment operation. The Urology Technician Program’s current staff of 4 leverages a combined 60 years of urologic expertise to teach the next generation of military medical professionals how to best support urologists at military treatment facilities spanning across the globe.

CBUNA is the only certifying body for urologic nurses and associates. The CBUNA certification is recognized for Magnet status hospitals and clinics. The certification remains a testimony to an individual’s specialty practice, expertise, and knowledge in urology.
The CBUNA mission is to improve the quality of care provided to urology patients by promoting and acknowledging the highest standards of urologic nursing practice through the certification process. Certification is a process by which a non-governmental agency or association validates an individual's qualifications and knowledge of practice in a defined function or clinical area, based upon predetermined standards. It assures both the lay public and other professionals that an individual has the knowledge needed to practice in a particular role in a particular specialty area.
CBUNA has expanded its mission to include the promotion of excellence in the clinical education/training programs offered by the health care industry and organizations. In response to an identified need from health care industry and organizations to achieve recognition of their industry associates/technicians as having completed an educationally sound program accredited by an external, non‐biased organization, CBUNA designed and created an accreditation process.
